BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Machinist position’s primary function is to, under the guidance of the senior or lead Machinist, calibrate and run critical machines to ensure continuity in machining items as needed.

DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Possess or can become capable of reading blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements with or without the assistance of a Lead or Senior Machinist.

  • Capable of measuring, marking, and scribing dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.

  • Under the guidance of a Lead or Senior Machinist, selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.

  • Under the guidance of a Lead or Senior Machinist, Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, speed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.

  • Under the guidance of a Lead or Senior Machinist, starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.

  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision instruments.

  • Under the guidance of a Lead or Senior Machinist, sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.

  • Posses or can become capable of fitting and assembling parts into complete assembly, using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools, and power tools with or without the assistance of a Lead or Senior Machinist.

  • Capable of verifying dimensions and alignment of assembly using measuring instruments such as micrometers, height gauges, and gauge blocks with or without the assistance of a Lead or Senior Machinist.

  • Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure unity of purpose and fulfillment of MSC’s mission.

  • Participates in special projects and performs additional duties as required.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or the equivalent is required.

  • Some Machine shop experience is preferred.

SKILLS:

  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Good interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are also required

  • Basic knowledge of blueprints and their interpretation is preferred.

  • Experience in flat or round grinding and in brazing and welding is preferred.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time is required.

  • Ability to lift 75 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds regularly is required.
