The Category Operations Specialist is responsible for execution and continuous improvement of category management and maintenance. The key disciplines within the Operations team will be Pricing and Cost Maintenance, Supplier Management & Compliance, and Sales Programs & Support. The Specialist will ensure data is consistent and accurate, provide timely responses to information or service requests, and execute processes and programs. The Specialist will work within the Operations COE (Center of Excellence) team and cross-functionally with internal customers.



  • Performs consistent and accurate data input and assessment

  • Uses analytical tools to report supplier performance and profitability



New Supplier set up, maintenance, and phase out

  • Set up – Work with supplier to collect detailed information and enter AS400

  • Maintenance – Maintain changes such as supplier contracts, sales contracts, payment terms, freight, etc.

  • Phase out – Update AS400, identify alternatives, communicate changes to the field

Year-end buys to boost rebate

  • Analyze MSC spend at the supplier level to understand maximum rebate opportunity

  • Work with category team to understand supplier strategy

  • Work with supplier on dates if a large buy is going to be placed

Conversion of web SKUs to stock process

  • SKU vitality analysis (how well SKUs are selling)

  • Understand cost, hazmat impact, compliance, impact to bring web SKUs to stock

  • Work with data team to move item data codes

  • Off-cycle stocking process – occurs if items fall outside of normal stocking process; very time and labor- intensive process.

  • Test tool and Sample processes – manage the sample request process from sales to the customer; follow up with sales on customer acceptance.

  • Report supplier compliance status (goals vs. compliance) and follow up to resolve any issues.

  • Point of Sale Maintenance / monthly reporting to supplier

  • Supplier communications – keep distribution list of 400k+ suppliers current


  • Timely response to sales team requests; Mailbox support – including dedicated category mailboxes and Exclusive Brand mailboxes (PRO-SAFE, Hertel, Accupro)

  • Execution of sales field engagement calendar and events – keep master calendar of field events and align with Marketing

  • Escalate operations issues as needed – credit holds, wrong items shipped, AP issues, sales issues

  • External communications, marketing activities and sales programs – new program launches, communication plans, presentation decks, etc.


  • Execution of pricing (PCR) maintenance – builds spreadsheets of SKU’s based upon sell price; perform completive analysis to set list price; enter information into AS400; manage exceptions and approvals.

  • Cost maintenance process/ tally sheet management/scams – triggered by a cost change from the supplier. Estimate impact to the business, work with the supplier to confirm the change; share and receive approval from the manager; enter changes into the system. Negotiations may be needed; after acceptance, process the “Tally Sheet” as final and enter new data into system.

  • Manages costing error – due diligence to understand root cause of errors on PO or invoices from a supplier; update information appropriately.

  • Analyze cost sell relationship:

  • How item(s) are positioned within MSC store vs. other like brands (Tier 1, 2)

  • How item (s) are positioned vs. Exclusive Brands

  • How item(s) are positioned in the market

  • GM % estimates of those items

  • Assemble commodity/pro-purchaser reporting for manager review – assess impact of commodity fluctuations in the market (steel, plastics, etc.) and correlation to MSC purchases; predict impact to category

  • Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC’s vision and unity of purpose

  • Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required

JOB TITLE: Specialist, Category Operations


  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field is required.

  • Two to four years of experience in supply chain, distribution, or sales/marketing required. Bachelors’ Degree in Business, Marketing, Supply Chain, or equivalent area of study preferred.

  • MS Office proficiency required; Access, Business Objects, and Sales Force preferred

  • Gathers information and learns; early problem solving and analytical skill development

  • AS400 experience preferred; Web proficiencies

  • Industrial product knowledge preferred.
