BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY:The Category Leadership Program Specialist, Sales Readiness is responsible for directing the full life cycle of Category Leadership programs, including working with Facilitators and Instructional Designers in conducting needs identification, development, facilitation, evaluation, program management, and execution of training and learning programs throughout Sales. This position is also expected to partner cross-functionally to effectively improve associate performance and drive resultsDUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans and leads the full life cycle of specific sales category leadership learning programs and development initiatives, including but not limited to, program needs analysis, design, development, utilization, sustainment, and measurement.

  • Develops training curriculum in response to business needs based on a disciplined needs and gap analysis approach.

  • Acts as a project/program manager on Sales Readiness category leadership initiatives, creating and managing project timelines, planning resource needs, and ensuring the project is implemented on time and within the prescribed scope.

  • Owns the development of performance measures and ROI for the category leadership training/learning program

  • Ensures that programs are maintained through effective tracking, reporting and communication procedures with training and sales management teams.

  • Collaborates with leadership to develop corrective action plans when ROI is in jeopardy. Base recommendations and conclusions on sound analysis methods.

  • Directs and coordinates a team of associates and outside resources as needed to deliver category leadership training and learning projects.

  • Coaches facilitators and instructional designers as needed to ensure category leadership learning programs are developed and delivered effectively.

  • Participates in vendor selection and management

  • Identifies and assists in defining and testing system changes for systems being used in the training and learning programs

  • Assists in creating and executing the department strategy and objectives.

  • Demonstrates the leadership skills necessary to make sound recommendations and effectively handle diverse and complex problems

  • Analyzes sales training needs and designs learning products in multiple formats (e.g. instructor-led, self-study, web-based, video, and simulation) that support business goals and improve individual performance.

  • Facilitates training as needed

  • Fosters the MSC Culture in the department and throughout the company to ensure fulfillment of MSC’s vision and unity of purpose.

  • Participation in special projects and performs additional duties as required


  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent work experience required.

  • Minimum of eight years of training experience required.

  • Minimum of five years of experience in Instructional Design required.

  • Minimum of four years of advanced metalworking sales or manufacturing knowledge required

  • Minimum of two years of safety, fastener, pneumatic and hydraulic experience required

  • Certification in at least two current MW Advanced Technical Programs required e.g. Tooling U Sales Master. Seco Step Certification, Lenox Advanced Metal Cutting, Kennametal CMTS, etc.….

  • Certification in a least one MRO category is required e.g. Fastener Certification, Parker Hannifin Certification or Safety Certification

  • Certification in training and/or instructional design required.

  • Certification in training measurement and evaluation preferred.


  • Knowledge of Instructional Design methodologies required.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, design and implement training solutions with a blended approach, including instructor led, e-learning, web and video-based training curriculum, and learning management systems (LMS) required

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, demanding, and complex work environment

  • Strong vendor management skills, with previous experience managing vendors required

  • Computer literacy and proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software required.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills required.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills with sensitivity to deadlines required.

  • Demonstrates analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as a strong commitment to customer satisfaction required.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally and collaboratively is required.

  • Advanced manufacturing industry knowledge required

  • Ability to operate metalworking manufacturing equipment both manual and CNC required

  • Advanced knowledge of fasteners, safety, hydraulic and pneumatic systems required

  • Knowledge of industrial distribution, and/or sales required.


  • Program Management – Effectively identify, design and implement training solutions working with a variety of stakeholders

  • Category leadership – Shows advanced capabilities in our key areas of category leadership incorporating key principals in effective facilitation

  • Proficiency in MSC defined core competencies is required. (See attached list of core competencies for detail.)


  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel up to 50% of the time are required.
